Rat Bastard Comic

I've let this blog over here at blogger.com go a bit stale, and I've been wondering what exactly to do with it. Since my last post, I've resurrected Rat Bastard, a comic I created back in the mid 90's. It's been a long slog to revive it, a style I hadn't worked in for years, a long bout with Lyme disease, a whole lot of Web tweaking, and some other setbacks. Back in the 90’s, I billed myself as one half of the Huja Bros. Tim Bird and I wrote stories for the comic Rat Bastard under that name, and I drew as well. Here’s a cover I did for Gimp Magazine. At the time, music scene snobs like Tim and I despised bands like Bush, Oasis, and No Doubt, so I sicced the martians on them in this piece. I always dug Mad Magazine, and wanted to give it that feel.

Secret Soldier Vs. The Master Racer

In my animated project, Adventures In Nowhere Land, Flea Market Phil is an avid reader and collector of comics. So there’s a lot of discussion about the history and minutia of comics. That means I’m working on fictitious Golden Age comics. Heres my first one: The Secret Solder trying to catch the Master Racer, a super fast fascist, who was originally created to win the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the experiment went horribly wrong. The Master Racer was not permitted to represent the German team, because he talked too fast and too much.

Here’s the first model sheets — yeah, I know these aren’t “traditional” model sheets. That must be a big shock, because I’ve always been soooo traditional. Yeah, right.

In studying model sheets over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that everybody has their own take on format. But calm down, I will make some more instructive model sheets in the near future. These are really to get across who the character is in lieu of putting together a “bible” for the project.

Editing and Animating or Drinking and Drawing

Last month I went "Drinking and Drawing" where over 100 animators showed up an NYC bar called M1-5 to collaborate on an animated film about a gorilla. It was organized by the fun people at Frederator Studios. We'll be doing it again in April. Here's some video I shot of the event -- it's my first attempt at Final Cut Pro.

Jeesh -- look at the distortion on this drawing on the old Looney Tunes classic! This stuff frame by frame is amazing. So John K wants us to draw from this insanity -- as if I don't have enough in my own life already. But John's the master, and in this case I'm the student. So here's the original:
